Complete mountain hiking Yangshuo guide: trail difficulty, elevation, timing, and multi-sport combos with climbing and caving for every fitness level.

Yangshuoโs karst terrain offers both gentle valley walks and short, steep limestone ascents, with views over the Li River and Yulong valley. This guide compares the effort involved and explains how to combine an open hiking route with climbing or guided caving in a single day. Moon Hill is included for closure information, not as a currently available hike.
Choose the Yulong valley for low-effort walking or Xianggong Mountain for a short stair ascent. Moon Hill is closed and cannot currently serve as the moderate-hike option.
Easy / low-effort โ Yulong River valley: Choose a short, flat out-and-back walk on the valley paths. Walking access is free; plan 2-3 hours including stops rather than treating that as the time for the entire valley. Turn back earlier if needed, and carry water and sun protection because shade varies along the route.
Closed โ Moon Hill: Located 8km south of town, Moon Hill has been closed to visitors since 8 October 2024 for upgrading and renovation, with no reopening date announced as of September 2026. Do not plan an ascent until reopening is confirmed. Historically, the route to the natural arch involved over 800 stone steps; uneven, steep steps required care, especially on the descent. There is no current entrance fee to quote while the scenic area is closed.
Short but steep โ Xianggong Mountain: This Li River viewpoint involves a stair climb rather than a sustained mountain trek. Allow about 20 minutes uphill, with extra time for stops and darkness; Ctripโs attraction description describes a climb of this length. Admission is ยฅ60 per person for a single entry (as of September 2026 โ confirm at the gate; basis: individual admission, as recorded by Ctrip, Tuniu and Dahe Ticketing). The ascent time excludes transfers and waiting at the viewpoint. For sunrise, confirm early entry arrangements before booking a pre-dawn transfer and bring a headlamp. Steep stairs can still be demanding for anyone with knee or balance difficulties.

Season matters. September-November is a useful planning window; the 18-28ยฐC range is a broad guide for packing, not a guarantee, and conditions vary by month and year. Yangshuo countyโs 1991-2020 climate normals place the wetter period in March-August, with May and June particularly wet; the seasonal pattern varies from year to year. July-August remains hot and humid (30-36ยฐC as a broad planning range, varying with the year and daily conditions), and heavy rain is possible beyond afternoon showers. Start early to reduce heat exposure, check the forecast and abandon exposed or slippery routes when conditions deteriorate. Winter (December-February) is generally cooler and drier; choose clear days and bring a warm layer for early starts.
Pair a short, open hike with one guided activity, leaving time for the actual transfer and any weather-related change of plan.
Valley walk + crag climbing: Combine a short Yulong valley walk with a guided climbing session. Moon Hill remains closed as of September 2026, so leave its ascent out of the itinerary. Ask your guide to confirm permission to access the specific crag, any entrance charge and the approach time before setting out. Our rock climbing Yangshuo page explains guided options.
Xianggong viewpoint + guided cave exploration: A short Xianggong visit can leave time for a separately arranged cave trip, provided the guide confirms the route, transfer and weather conditions. Deeper cave passages can feel cooler, but conditions vary and caves are not a weather-proof fallback. Have a local caving guide assess recent rainfall, the forecast and flood risk before entering. Our cave exploration Yangshuo page explains what to expect on a guided trip.
Logistics for combo days: Agree the route and transport before the day begins; do not assume distant trailheads, crags and cave entrances form a quick cycling loop. If renting a bicycle or e-scooter for a suitable route, agree the daily rate and any deposit at the shop. Pack water, sun protection and grippy walking shoes, and confirm climbing and caving equipment with the guide. A hiking headlamp alone is not sufficient preparation for a wild-cave trip.
